Nestled on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Sayulita is more than a picturesque surf town with stunning beaches and waves. It’s a living, breathing community full of cultures, traditions, and incredible people.

Sayulita’s hidden gems are waiting to welcome you!

As guests in this beautiful country, we have the power to make a positive impact by choosing to support Indigenous communities and Mexican-owned businesses.

This guide highlights some of Sayulita’s hidden gems (there are so many!), from Indigenous artists, to local food trucks, restaurants, and surf schools.

By spending our money mindfully, we can enjoy experiences that reflect the town’s heart and spirit while lending to the preservation Sayulita’s cultural and economic fabric.

Why Supporting Local Businesses Matters

Like many popular tourist destinations in Mexico, Sayulita faces challenges from rapid development, gentrification, and the influx of foreign-owned businesses.

Tourism can be both a blessing and a challenge for small towns like Sayulita.

On one hand, it generates income and creates opportunities.

On the other, it can lead to rising property values, and the commercialization and loss of traditions.

These changes have reshaped the town in ways that can leave local families struggling to maintain their place within the community.

Choosing to support Sayulita’s hidden gems – its Indigenous artists and Mexican-owned businesses – can counterbalance some of these effects.

When you support local artists and locally owned businesses, you:

  1. Keep money circulating locally: Profits stay in the community rather than going to large corporations or foreign investors.
  1. Preserve Sayulita’s culture: Local businesses reflect the town’s unique history and traditions, offering an authentic experience.
  1. Strengthen community ties: Supporting locals fosters relationships that go beyond transactions, creating connections that enrich your travel experience.

Indigenous People of the Sayulita Area

Sayulita, like all of Mexico, rests on land rich with history and cultural significance tied to the region’s Indigenous communities.

The Huichol people, or Wixárika (as they refer to themselves in Wixárika Niukiyari – their language), are among the most prominent Indigenous communities in the Nayarit region, including areas around Sayulita.

The Wixárika people have lived in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains for centuries, maintaining a profound connection to their land, spiritual traditions, and artistic practices.

They are a vital part of the region’s identity. Their traditions and connection to the land offer visitors a deeper understanding of Sayulita beyond its beaches and surf culture.

Like many Indigenous communities across Mexico, the Wixárika people face challenges, including land disputes, loss of traditional ways of life, and other pressures from tourism.

Despite these challenges, they are resilient, continuing to pass down their traditions and extending invitations to share their cultures with us.

By honouring and supporting Indigenous communities, we can learn about their traditions and ensure voices remain part of Sayulita’s evolving history.

Cultural and Spiritual Significance

For the Wixárika, the natural world is deeply spiritual, with every element – land, ocean, and sky – playing a role in their worldviews and traditions.

Sayulita and its surrounding areas are considered sacred, not only for their physical beauty but also for their ties to Wixárika cosmology.

Their ceremonial practices often involve pilgrimages to sacred sites where offerings are made to ensure balance and harmony with nature.

This reverence for the land stands in contrast to modern development, which sometimes encroaches on these sacred spaces.

As guests, recognizing and respecting the spiritual and cultural significance of the land helps preserve the Wixárika legacy.

Art and Tradition

The Wixárika are known for their stunning yarn paintings and beaded art, which are more than just decorative – they are visual expressions of their spiritual beliefs and sacred stories.

You might notice these intricate works for sale in local artisan markets, in the main plaza, or galleries around Sayulita.

When purchasing these pieces, ensure they are made by Indigenous artists or cooperatives to directly support their livelihoods.

Local Insight✨ : Beading for almost 10 years, Laura is a talented artist! You can find her daily along with many other Indigenous artist at the Mercado Artesanal.

Be curious and ask the artist about the meaning behind the designs. They are often symbolic representations of natural elements like deer (considered sacred), corn (a life-giving plant), or peyote (used in spiritual ceremonies).

How Guests Can Support Indigenous Communities

  1. Respect sacred spaces and the natural world: Avoid disturbing areas identified as sacred or important to local Indigenous communities.

If visiting natural sites or participating in cultural experiences, ask for guidance from a local who understands their significance.

Avoid disturbing or taking anything from the land, including shells, rocks, or plants. These elements are part of the ecosystem and may hold cultural or ceremonial importance.

By leaving nature as you found it (or better!), you help preserve the land’s beauty and respect its deep connection to local Indigenous communities.

  1. Buy authentic art: Support Wixárika artists by purchasing directly from them at markets or cooperatives. Look for authentic pieces rather than mass-produced imitations.
  1. Learn their stories: Engage with Indigenous community members to better understand their history, beliefs, and challenges. Many locals are eager to share their histories and cultures, if approached with respect and curiosity.
  1. Support Indigenous-led initiatives: Seek out tours or workshops led by Indigenous people or organizations that ensure proceeds directly benefit the community.

Respecting and supporting Sayulita’s Indigenous communities is a vital part of responsible travel.

Another meaningful way to give back is by uplifting locally owned Mexican businesses that reflect the town’s vibrant culture and traditions.

Plus, it’s a great way to start a meaningful conversation that connect you with the local community!

It is more than just a place to eat – it’s a hub for community, culture, and connection.

The Story Behind Papu’s

Papu’s was born out of discipline, determination, and a bit of humour.

As Velkam jokes, “I started the food truck because I didn’t want to die of hunger after the previous restaurant here closed down!”

But beneath the laughter lies a deep commitment to building something meaningful for everyone.

For Velkam and Pako, Papu’s represents the spirit of Sayulita – a place where relationships, hospitality, respect, and passion are woven into life’s tapestry.
