Travelling in Mexico is an experience unlike any other. Here’s my top 10 Mexico travel tips of things you need to know, before you go!

Having travelled across 12 states and more than 35 cities, I’ve learned firsthand (and through many errors!) what makes for a seamless and rewarding trip.

Whether you’re visiting bustling cities, colonial towns, or coastal paradises, these tips will help you navigate Mexico like a pro.

1. Greet Everyone with Gratitude

In Mexico, greetings matter!

Whether entering a shop, passing someone on the street, or meeting a new acquaintance, acknowledging people with a warm “Buenos días” (Good morning) or “Buenas tardes” (Good afternoon) shows respect and fosters connection.

A simple greeting can open doors to kindness, helpfulness, and genuine interactions.

Pro Travel Tip: Use the appropriate greeting based on the time of day:

  • “Buenos días” (Good morning) until noon
  • “Buenas tardes” (Good afternoon) from noon until sunset
  • “Buenas noches” (Good evening) after dark

2. Pack Earplugs & an Eye Mask

Noise and bright lights can sneak up on you in the most unexpected places – you never know when a lively mariachi band will be outside your hotel or where those early morning roosters really live (Spoiler alert: they live everywhere!).

For me, loop earplugs are a game-changer for blocking out sound while keeping things comfortable.

Pair them with an eye mask for uninterrupted rest, no matter where you are!

3. Never Pass Up a Free Bathroom

When you come across a free restroom, take advantage of it!

Public bathrooms in Mexico often come with a small fee and finding one when you really need it isn’t always easy.

Be prepared, and when in doubt – go when you have the chance!

4. Take Advantage of Free Cultural Activities on Sundays

In many cities, Sundays are dedicated to family, culture, and community.

Most museums and archaeological sites offer free entry to Mexican citizens and residents, and international visitors can still enjoy the lively atmosphere with fewer crowds (or more crowds depending on where you are!).

5. Carry Cash for Local Markets and Tolls

While credit cards are becoming more common in Mexico, many local markets, street vendors, and toll booths operate on a cash-only basis.

Small bills and coins come in handy for quick purchases, tipping, and even using public restrooms, which often charge a small fee.

Pro Travel Tips:

  • Always use ATMs inside banks for added security
  • Always decline the ATM conversion rate (Don’t worry, your bank does it for you!)
  • Keep a few 5- or 10-peso coins on hand for tipping parking attendants or restroom attendants
  • If bringing pesos with you, get the smallest bills possible as change is a hard thing to come by in most instances

6. Bring Eco-Friendly Essentials

Many natural attractions in Mexico are working towards sustainability, and being a responsible traveller makes a difference.

Pack:

  • A reusable water bottle (preferably with a filter)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen to protect marine ecosystems (Spray suncreens are the worst!)
  • A tote bag for shopping to reduce plastic waste

7. Support Street and Beach Vendors

Buying from local vendors directly supports families and communities. From handcrafted jewellery, fresh fruit, to a homemade tamale, street vendors offer some of the best and most authentic products!

Pro Travel Tip: Treat each purchase as an opportunity to connect and support local livelihoods.

8. Experience Late-Night Street Food

Some of Mexico’s best food comes alive after dark. Late-night taco stands, tamale vendors, and churro carts offer delicious and affordable eats.

Follow the locals to find the best spots, and don’t leave without trying tacos al pastor or churros con chocolate!

9. Navigate Markets Like a Local

Mexico Market. Navigate them like a pro with these travel tips

Mexican markets (mercados) are lively, colourful, and full of incredible finds.

To make the most of your visit:

  • Go in the morning for the freshest produce and best selection.
  • Take your time – browsing and chatting with vendors is part of the experience.
  • Negotiate politely but respectfully; bargaining is common, but artisans deserve fair pay for their work.

Pro Travel Tip: Before saying something is “too expensive”, consider the exchange rate and the time, skill, and cultural heritage behind local crafts.

Artisans dedicate years to mastering their method, often using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

10. Use WhatsApp for Easy Communication

WhatsApp is the go-to app for messaging in Mexico!

Businesses, tour operators, and even small restaurants use it to confirm reservations and answer customer questions.

Download it before your trip to stay connected.
